Bioshock to Windows

File size
Irrational Games

The project is quite high quality as a game - there is pleasant action, interesting exploration of grotesque locations and special abilities. But the primary value of the game lies in its idea and presentation. Under the background of a sad cautionary tale about how you can't just get rid of the elements of society you don't like, serious social issues are revealed.

More about Bioshock

Bioshock is loved primarily because it allows itself to be very unusual. It successfully combines elements of horror and survival with some hardcore action and puzzles. The gameplay, while very good, serves only as a backdrop for the imaginative dialogue between the protagonist and the antagonist, which sometimes descends into biblical motifs.

That's not to say, however, that without an interest in deeper meanings Bioshock has nothing to hook the player. There is a great story here, even if you don't delve into all sorts of references and just enjoy it while studying the lore of this unusual universe. Like any quality game-idea, Bioshock has many facets - that's why its audience is so wide.

Advantages of the project:

  • Unique atmosphere. Bioshock is a steampunk game that shows a retro-futuristic perspective of fictional locations of the past. In practice it is strange mechanisms, gigantism and unusual artistic tricks literally at every step. The developers even managed to bring some of the atmosphere directly into the gameplay.
  • Balanced action with all sorts of abilities. Bioshock is not an ordinary shooter, but a game with a lot of options for the player. Of course, shooting remains the primary means, but the player also has abilities, unique units in the arsenal, and consumables at his disposal.
  • Stunning visual design. The year of release the project did not make any graphic breakthrough, but the players had enough of the love and exorbitant imagination with which everything in the game was designed - from important locations to enemy models, even minor ones.
  • The quality of execution in all aspects. Despite the fact that the original Bioshock was the debut in the future famous series, some of the most talented people in the industry worked on it. The stylistics, graphics, music, and technical side of the action (as much as possible) are excellent here.
  • The impact on the game world. It may not seem like something amazing now, but back then being able to directly influence the game world in real time was something amazing and noteworthy.

Now the game, like the direct sequel, has a remaster - a graphically and technically improved copy of the game. For the newcomers, who have never heard anything about Bioshock and even more so, who have not caught the game in the late 2000s, it is advisable to play this version. If you are acquainted with this famous project and just want to feel nostalgic, then any version will be up-to-date - anyway the game did not have great technical problems.

You should play Bioshock if you are:

  • a fan of steampunk stylistics - it's one of the most important games and media projects in general in this theme;
  • you like games with a double bottom, social implication and reason to think;
  • prefer "smart" action, where you have to use a variety of means to achieve the result;
  • value in games difficult moral choices.

It's hard to argue with the fact that Bioshock is a cult game. An imposing age by today's standards is no barrier to try a truly unique project.
