How to make a transparent background in Paint 3D

Microsoft Paint 3D is a specialized graphic editor that first appeared in one of the updates for Windows 10. The program is developed by Microsoft's London division and includes a full set of features from the classic Paint and the 3D Builder tool, which is aimed at creating three-dimensional models of various complexities.

Paint 3D has its own library of models, but for most users, working with raster graphics is more in demand. The most popular feature among ordinary users is removing the background from various images. Let's see how to make the background transparent in Paint 3D and what is required for this.

Installation Guide for Paint 3D

The stable version of Paint 3D was first introduced in the April update of Windows 10 in 2018, build version 1803. Due to this, many Windows users who have disabled automatic updates are unable to find the program in their directory.

To locate the program, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Start menu and go to "Settings".
  2. From there, navigate to "Update & Security" and click on "Check for Updates". Install any suggested updates.
  3. If the Paint 3D program still does not appear in the program directory, go to the Microsoft Store at "apps.microsoft.com".
  4. In the search bar, enter "Paint 3D" and go to the program's page. Install it on your computer.

How to Create a Transparent Background in Paint 3D

There are two ways to create a transparent background in Paint 3D. The first method is to create a transparent canvas on which graphics will be applied. The second method involves separating an object from the background in a real photo or image. Let's explore both options.

In a New Project

Launch Paint 3D by searching for it in the Start menu. If the program is not found, follow the instructions above to download it.

To make the background transparent in a new project, follow these steps:

  1. Create a new project by clicking on "Create". This will create a default project with a white canvas.
  2. Click on the "Canvas" tab. In the "Transparent canvas" section on the right, toggle the switch to "On".
  3. The canvas will become gray (invisible). Now, any graphics applied to the image will have a transparent background.
  4. To save the project, click on the "Menu" tab, then select "Save as". Choose the desired file format in the "File Type" section, enter a name, and click "Save".

In a Photo or Illustration

Download the desired photo or illustration from the internet and save it to a convenient location on your hard drive. Right-click on the file, select "Open with", and choose Paint 3D.

To remove the background in this case, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the "Magic Select" tool in the top menu.
  2. Use the scroll feature to zoom in on the image if the object is too small. You can also use the points around the image to adjust the edges around the selected object.
  3. Click the "Next" button on the right side of the screen. The program will automatically select the object's contour based on its algorithms. However, these algorithms may not always work correctly and may miss certain parts of the object.
  4. To edit the selection, click on the "Add" button on the right side. Trace the missing elements on the image and observe the result.
  5. If you need to remove a specific part of the selection, click on "Remove" and remove the unnecessary parts from the object.
  6. Once finished, click on the "Done" button.

The object will now be separated from the background. To copy it, click on the icon in the "Edit" section on the right and transfer it to a new project or another image. As we can see, making the background transparent in Paint 3D is quick and easy. This tool can be used for virtually any image.
